Lagos – The West AfricanExaminations Council (WAEC)on Friday said it withheld theresults of 112,000candidates who sat for theMay/June 2012 West AfricanSenior School CertificateExamination (WASSCE).Dr Iyi Uwadiae, Head ofNational Office of WAEC, whoaddressed newsmen inLagos, said that the resultswere withheld overexamination malpractices.“I want to say that thesecases are already beinginvestigated and the reportsof our findings will bepresented to the NigerianExaminations Committee(NEC) of the council in duecourse for consideration.“The committee’s decisionwill be communicated to theaffected candidates throughtheir schools,” he said.Giving a breakdown of theresults, he disclosed that only1,672,224 of the 1,695,878candidates who registeredfor the examinationnationwide sat for it.He said that those who satfor the examination include923,974 males and 748,250females and that only1,545,004 had their resultsfully released.Uwadiae said that a fewsubjects of 150,874 othercandidates were still beingprocessed, due to someerrors mainly traceable to thecandidates and schools inthe course of registration orwriting the examination.He disclosed that 771,731candidates had six creditsand above, 952,156 othershad five credits and abovewhile 1,107,747 had creditsand above in four subjects.Uwadiae said that 1,246,729had credits and above inthree subjects and 1,380,596obtained credits and abovein just two subjects.The head of national officesaid a total of 649,156candidates who sat for theexamination obtained creditsin five subjects and above,including English Languageand MathematicsHe said that out of the 114blind candidates thatregistered for theexamination, only 95 sat forit and 21 of them had creditsin five subjects includingEnglish Language.He said that blind candidateswere usually not allowed totake Mathematics andScience practicals.Uwadiae said that theperformance of candidateswas an improvement,compared to previous years.“This year’s results haveshown an improvement onthe 23.71 per cent ofcandidates who obtainedcredits in five subjects,including English Languageand Mathematics in a similarexamination in 2010.“This year’s 649,156candidates with that record,represented 38.81 per centand I can say that this is amarked improvement in theperformance of thecandidates,” he said.Uwadiae attributed theimprovement to theinvestment made by thecurrent administration in theeducation sector, which hesaid, was in line with thetransformation agenda.He urged candidates tocheck for the details of theirperformance on the council’sresult website within thenext 48 hours.
